Architecture Against Bias

Day Care Center + Work Training Center
This integrated centre is served for homeless single families to facilitate interaction among parents, children and citizens. The centre offers a supportive environment for children including casework, counselling for carers, support groups, extra support for schooling, help with emotional and behavioural problems, access to leisure activities, and contact with other carers.

For parents, they can go through training or find jobs without the pressure of looking after their children. Moreover, citizens volunteers are to engage with urban common activities to address the homelessness issue. Their involvement is expected to increase interaction between everyone sharing the same spaces, thus enhancing social awareness towards homelessness issues.

This is the social experiment of The Homeless Man VS Homeless Child in New York City. A boy dressed up as a homeless person and placing
it next to a homeless man. In the video, no one donates to the homeless man, even cares about his situation. A man didn’t use empathy and sympathy to treat the homeless man, he is just standing at his own view and thought to look at him. Bias is always appear in the world.

The final selection is no.10, the restaurant face to the bikeway to activate this path and draw people to the lower level as view 1 shown.
Moreover, after people get into the restaurant, they may discover that the kitchen is visible and someone would be curious about the
activities inside or not, actually it’s a cooking classroom, but people would assume that is a kitchen. Finally, if someone wants to go toilet,
they would pass through a corridor, the real kitchen is also visible, people may question about there are two kitchens with different
activities, someone may ask the staff and realize that the bias made before or not, they will know the usage of this building is self-sufficient
by homeless people, and they learn from here and have an internship here to earn working experience here, they may erase the
misunderstanding of homeless issues. bias
